Tributes from the profession to HM Queen Elizabeth II
Scotland’s courts, public bodies and legal professional bodies have joined the nation in paying tribute to HM Queen Elizabeth II following her death yesterday at the age of 96.
Murray Etherington, President of the Law Society of Scotland, said:
"Like the whole country, the Law Society of Scotland mourns the loss of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.
"The Queen served our country with dedication and devotion for over 70 years. She was an outstanding ambassador for the UK around the world and a source of inspiration for so many at home.
"We were delighted when The Queen wrote to welcome lawyers from across the world when the Law Society of Scotland hosted the 2015 Commonwealth Law Conference in Glasgow. It underlined her commitment to the Commonwealth and her recognition of the importance of the rule of law within this historic family of nations.
"We extend our heartfelt condolences to the members of the Royal Family, who will be in our thoughts and prayers in the days and weeks ahead."
For the Scottish bar, Dean of Faculty Roddy Dunlop KC said: “It was with deep sorrow that the Faculty of Advocates heard the news of the passing of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, who served the nation with grace and distinction for decades, and was an honorary Member of Faculty.
“We may not wear weepers any more, but we shall mourn her nonetheless. Faculty extends its sincere condolences to the Royal Family.”
Advocates and solicitor advocates who were appointed Queen’s Counsel automatically become King’s Counsel following the accession of King Charles III.
Courts and tribunals across Scotland will adjourn today as a mark of respect. The Lord President, Lord Carloway, said: “As the nation enters a period of mourning, the judiciary will support the Royal Family and facilitate the arrangements being put in place to enable members of the public to pay their respects.”
Offering condolences on behalf of the Solicitor General, and the staff of the Crown Office & Procurator Fiscal Service, Lord Advocate Dorothy Bain QC said:
“Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was a truly exceptional woman whose dedication to public service stood as an example to us all.
“She was steadfast through decades of challenge and change and she never failed to show leadership, dignity and grace.
“Today we remember one of the greatest figures of world history and we send sincere condolences to her family and all those who are sharing our profound sense of loss.”
