Two Scots lawyers honoured in New Year list
Alexander McCall Smith, Emeritus Professor of Medical Law at the University of Edinburgh, who became a household name as author of The No 1 Ladies' Detective Agency and the 44 Scotland Street novels, has been knighted in the New Year Honours List
Receiving his title for services to literature, academia and charity, Sir Alexander is also a patron of several charities, including the Eric Liddell care charity and community hub in Edinburgh, and was a driving influence behind the Great Tapestry of Scotland.
In his academic life he co-authored a leading textbook on forensic medicine.
Commenting that he felt "most honoured" at his award, he added: "Writing the books has given me great pleasure over the years and if they have been appreciated, then I am delighted."
Also honoured is retired Pitlochry solicitor and charity law specialist Colin Liddell, who becomes an MBE for services to theatre and the arts in Scotland. Formerly chairman for 10 years of the Pitlochry Festival Theatre, he has been involved with the theatre for more than 20 years and remains a trustee as well as Honorary President.
